Larry Freeborg remembers the day vividly when he realized he was not powerless in the face of total despair and grief. It happened when he was in the “psych ward” after the death of his 39-year-old wife from leukemia, leaving him with four young children, right as his company eliminated his position with a 8% unemployment. Finally, it dawned on him that every moment offered a choice. He was Always At Choice. Are all of us always at choice? Larry is here to answer that question. 

BIO: Life as he knew it ended in a single week. Just after Christmas in 1979, Larry Freeborg lost his wife of 18 years. Suddenly, he was a widowed father of four with no income. What followed was not a quick journey but a decades-long journey of learning how to grieve, how to lead with love, and how to rediscover hope in the face of unimaginable loss. Today, he is the author of Always At Choice and the founder of Stepping Through the Gate.

A Conversation with Chef Adrian, a Nationally recognized Junior Chef

Loco Dos is a Cape Cod based pop up food business supporting community organizations and featuring Chef Adrian, a nationally recognized junior chef.

From a young age, Adrian loved to cook. And when he learned about homelessness from an elementary school workshop, he had an idea: what if he could sell his meals and support housing advocacy? Alas, Loco Dos was born.

From Adrian:

Loco Dos is my family-friendly pop up restaurant where I can share my favorite foods with my community while also supporting non profits like HPC by donating proceeds to their organization.

My love of food started in Pre-K when I went to Farm Camp at Newton Community Farm and I became fascinated with all the fresh ingredients grown here in Massachusetts from fennel, basil, mint and more!  When I was five I got my first cookbook and I started making granola and soon that inspired me to want to learn to cook everything from soups, pizzas, meatballs, and more. In 2nd grade, I learned about homelessness at Stony Brook Elementary and I wanted to do something to help.

My parents helped me combine my love of cooking and my wish to help my community  –  and I thought this was the best idea. And then Loco Dos was born. The first season of Loco Dos was AMAZING! We had a lot of customers and have met some amazing people and Loco Dos champions along the way.

Dr. Jesse Fister on Finding Meaning When Faith Changes

On this episode of the Make Mental Health Matter Show, host Kelli Melissa Reinhardt is back in the studio with special guest Dr. Jesse Fister. 

A little bit about his story from him:

I was raised as the son and grandson of evangelical ministers. Practicing philosophy helped me overcome a religious crisis in my early twenties. After that, I obtained a Masters in Transpersonal Psychology to help understand some unusual experiences I had. Then, I earned a doctorate in clinical psychology to tend to the soul of others and the world. My training was mostly psychoanalytic, so my therapy practice is relational and helps clients get to the root of unconscious conflicts.

Short Bio:

Dr. Jesse Fister is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides depth-oriented psychotherapy for adults working through anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, life transitions, and questions of meaning and identity. He holds a PhD in depth psychology and sees clients through his private practice, Riverbed Psychology, in Denver and by telehealth across many states. He is also the author of Soul to Soil, where he writes about psychology, meaning, and the inner life.
