04/09/2026 | 55 minWhen He Says He’ll Change: What Real Recovery From Porn Addiction Actually Looks Like
With Sathiya Sam, Founder of DeepClean™
After discovering pornography, infidelity, or other secret sexual behavior, one of the hardest questions isn't simply Why did he do it?
It's Can he actually change?
He may swear he'll never do it again. Delete apps. Install filters. Start therapy. Hand over his phone. Go weeks or months without pornography. And you desperately want to believe that this time is different.
But how can you tell the difference between someone who has stopped a behavior—for now—and someone who is actually changing?
In this episode, Lora Cheadle sits down with Sathiya Sam, founder of DeepClean™, author of The Last Relapse, and host of The Man Within podcast, for a candid conversation about pornography addiction, betrayal, relapse, and what lasting recovery really requires.
Drawing from his own 15-year struggle with pornography and his work helping men recover, Sathiya explains why pornography addiction is rarely solved by willpower, promises, shame, filters, or simply trying harder. Lasting change requires getting underneath the behavior to the emotional wounds, unmet needs, nervous-system patterns, beliefs, and identity that helped create the cycle in the first place. His current DeepClean approach likewise emphasizes addressing underlying emotional wounds, core beliefs, unmet needs, regulation, identity, and relationships rather than measuring success only by abstinence.
Lora and Sathiya also address the question so many betrayed partners struggle with: What is my role in his recovery?
Because supporting someone is not the same as recovering for them.
You cannot love him enough, monitor him enough, become a "superwife," have more sex, make his life easier, or find the perfect words that will make him change. His recovery belongs to him. Your healing belongs to you.
And perhaps most importantly, recovery doesn't have to mean returning to the relationship you had before. When someone genuinely addresses the roots of addiction, the goal isn't simply a man who no longer watches pornography. It's a man who knows himself better, regulates himself differently, communicates more honestly, takes responsibility for his needs and behavior, and begins showing up differently in his marriage and his life.
Top 3 Takeaways
Stopping the behavior is not the same as healing what created it.
A promise to stop, an internet filter, accountability software, or a period of abstinence may change behavior without addressing its roots. Sathiya describes lasting recovery as developing self-awareness, healing underlying emotional wounds and unmet needs, and shifting identity—not merely becoming better at resisting pornography.
Look for trends of transformation, not just streaks of abstinence.
Instead of asking only, How many days has he been "clean"?, look at what is changing in the man. Can he name his emotions and needs? Regulate himself during difficult conversations? Talk about what he's uncovering without becoming immediately defensive? Take responsibility for his recovery? Communicate honestly about both struggles and progress? As Sathiya explains, a relapse does not automatically erase every bit of growth—and a long streak does not necessarily prove the underlying problem has healed.
You can support his recovery, but you cannot do it for him.
One of the most painful truths for a betrayed partner is that you cannot make someone want recovery more than they want it themselves. Your job is not to become his accountability partner or work harder for his healing than he does. Your work is getting your own support, processing your pain safely, establishing and upholding your boundaries, and paying attention to what his behavior—not merely his promises—is showing you.

In this episode of Friends With The World, Michelle Villegas welcomes artist, author, illustrator, sculptor, and educator Sue DiCicco-Smith.
From her early career as an animator to her work creating and illustrating children's books, sculpture, and arts programs for young people. Sue has dedicated her creative gifts to inspiring imagination and connection.
Sue is also the founder of Armed with Arts and the Peace Crane Project, a global initiative that brings people together through the simple act of folding an origami crane and sharing a personal message of peace. What began with a question—What can artists do to make a difference?—has grown into an opportunity for children and adults around the world to connect across cultures, borders, and communities.
In this inspiring conversation, Sue shares the story behind the Peace Crane Project, its connection to Sadako Sasaki and Hiroshima, and her journey to Japan to learn more about Sadako's life and legacy.
She also reflects on the power of creativity to help children develop confidence, empathy, curiosity, and a sense of connection to the larger world.
At its heart, this conversation is a reminder that peace isn't something we simply wait for others to create. Each of us can use our own gifts, creativity, and connections to help bring about positive change.
One crane. One connection. One person can help give peace wings.

Website: friendswiththeworld.com - Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #684 is an hour of visionary acoustic improv music recorded by The Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, native flute, ukuelele, acoustic guitar and dulcimer, Craig Harris on congas and Native drum and Bob Sherwood on piano. Recorded on a lush August afternoon at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today’s show begins with the dreamy, sedate “All Life Unfolds”, a drifting, lovely thing led by Mariam’s pretty stream-of-consciousness lyric and languid vocal. “So Many Veils” follows with a native flute fanfare from Mariam and evolves into a hushed, meditative piece and “Finding Our Power Deep Within” is a summer celebration led by Mariam’s chiming ukulele draped on a bluesy piano bassline from Bob. Mariam continues strumming her ukulele for “It’s Gonna Be All Right”, a simple folk song that quickly evolves in a lovely, minimalist prayer with entrance of Bob’s beautiful piano motif and Craig’s round, steady congas. Mariam picks up her dulcimer for the next two pieces, the gorgeous, detailed “Sea Of Love” and the ragaesque “We Are The Ancient Ones”. We finish today with the beautiful, melancholy “Dare To Dream In Your True Essence” featuring soaring, exotic double flute and evocative vocals from Mariam.

In Steve’s words: After returning home from a difficult tour of duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, I stepped back behind the walls of a Massachusetts penitentiary where I battled each day as a prison investigator. Needless to say, there was great negativity in my life at that time, and very little opportunity to heal from my wartime demons (or pursue my dreams of being published). I finally decided to return to college to finish my degree in Criminal Justice. During one of the classes, my professor, Barry McKee, detailed police work, but barely touched on other topics. I finally raised his hand and asked, “As the criminal justice system is so vast, what about the courts, probation, parole – corrections?” Barry smiled and told me to see him after class. I thought I’d done it! In his office, Barry explained, “Except from the slanted perspectives of inmates, there’s no real written material out there on corrections, or prisons.” Barry smiled again and then dropped the bomb that would change my life forever. “If you’re so smart,” he said, “why don’t you write it?” It was the last push I needed to get writing. Nine months later, I placed the first draft of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue (under the pen name, Steven Herberts) on Barry’s desk. From then on, I was hooked. I was a writer.
The Ledger
Set in a medium-security penitentiary in the mid-1990s, The Ledger is a faith-based story that pulls back the curtain on prison life, allowing the reader an eye-opening tour behind the wall. Although told from three alternating perspectives—officer, inmate, and sergeant—many of the same questions are asked: Can light be found in the deepest darkness? What about forgiveness, redemption, and grace? If the code is clear, “loyalty above all things except honor,” when should an officer cross the blue line to police one of his own?
Early readers are calling The Ledger impossible to put down, claiming that the unexpected twist at the end left them speechless…
The Ledger is the long-awaited companion novel to The Menu.
“The Ledger illuminates the dark world of Corrections, making it safe for all of us to steal a peek.” ~ Barry McKee, Professor Emeritus, Criminal Justice
“I found myself holding my breath. It felt like I was right back inside the wall.” ~ Nelson Julius, Deputy Superintendent, DOC (ret.)
“Intensely powerful and deeply moving, pick up a copy to balance your own ledger.”
– Debby Guyette, Book Blogger, Single Titles
“The Ledger is a spiritual read, drawing the reader inward.”
– Reverend Andy Stinson, First Congregational Church of Fall River
