Episode 558: Tron: Ares, A House of Dynamite, Kiss of the Spider Woman
October 10 is such an insanely packed week that we wanted to review a few of the new releases a little early here at Breakfast All Day: TRON: ARES: The third movie in the "Tron" series has a dopey script but extremely cool visual effects and a great soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails. See it on a giant screen and pretend you're watching a two-hour music video. Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Evan Peters star. In theaters this weekend. A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE: Kathryn Bigelow is back with a sharp, tense tale about what happens when an unknown country launches a nuclear strike against the United States. Rebecca Ferguson, Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Gabriel Basso and Jared Harris are among the incredible ensemble cast. This is one of the year's best. In theaters this weekend before streaming on Netflix Oct. 24. KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN: This splashy movie musical from "Dreamgirls" director Bill Condon features dazzling production numbers, lush production values and great performances from Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, who is going to be a star. In theaters this weekend. Check back with us on Friday when we'll have reviews of "Roofman" and "Urchin" as well as Movie News LIVE! Join us at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific. Episode 557: Good Boy, Play Dirty, Are We Good? reviews
We'll spin around and wag our tails for a treat -- we're kinda shameless that way here at Breakfast All Day. October begins with reviews of three very different films: GOOD BOY, a lean and clever horror movie told from a dog's perspective. Indy, who's director and co-writer Ben Leonberg's own retriever, is actually the best boy. And in case you're worried: He's OK at the end. In theaters. PLAY DIRTY, a listless action comedy from director and co-writer Shane Black, who's had a much better track record with this kind of movie in the past ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "The Nice Guys"). Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield lead an ensemble cast. Streaming on Prime Video, but you should avoid it. ARE WE GOOD?, an intimate documentary that looks at the life and career of comedian and "WTF Podcast" host Marc Maron. In particular, it focuses on how he's working through grief after the death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We liked this. In theaters. Next week is nuts, with about eight movies coming out that have awards potential, or at least year-end buzz. So keep your ears open, and we'll help guide you through this busy time. Episode 555: Eleanor the Great, Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, Movie News LIVE!
We're wrapping up September with a quick and random episode of Breakfast All Day so we can get out to the theater and see our people in person! Tonight's the night for our meet-and-greet at CinemaWest Beach Cities in El Segundo. We'll be at the lobby bar before the 6pm showing of "One Battle After Another." Details and tickets are available here: https://web.cinemawest.com/films/One-Battle-After-Another/HO00000209 As for new reviews, we begin with "Eleanor the Great," Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut. June Squibb stars as 94-year-old woman who moves back to New York after the loss of her best friend and tells a big lie that spirals out of control. This movie is a mess tonally, but Squibb is always a delight. In theaters. Next up is "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror." This is a documentary about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," the ultimate cult movie, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary today. Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien and many more share their memories of this groundbreaking, enduring film, which is still playing in midnight showings decades later. In theaters. Finally, it's Movie News LIVE! Jimmy Kimmel's back, trailers for "The Mandalorian and Grogu" and "The Bride," the "Weapons" spin-off movie about Aunt Gladys and much more. Episode 554: HIM, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Movie News LIVE!
September winds down in unspectacular fashion here at Breakfast All Day with two new movies you're welcome to avoid. We begin with "HIM," a horror film set in the world of pro football. Lots of style, cool production design and some striking cinematography, but it becomes overwhelming and -- eventually -- just plain silly. Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers and Julia Fox star. In theaters. Then we discuss "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey," which isn't much better. Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie meet cute at a wedding, then get stuck on a magical realist road trip in a rented Saturn where they must return to pivotal moments from their pasts. Kogonada ("Columbus," "After Yang") directed, and we usually love him, but this is cloying and hollow. In theaters. Finally, we have a lengthy Movie News LIVE! for you. We spent quite a bit of time on Jimmy Kimmel and Robert Redford, but we also discussed the new Taylor Swift movie and the trailer for "Anaconda." Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Thanks for being here! Join us before a showing of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER on opening weekend. We'll be at CinemaWest Beach Cities before the 6pm showing on Friday, Sept. 26. Say hello to us in the lobby bar starting around 530pm, then head into the theater and see the movie on their GIANT screen.
