Blair Berk and Marilyn Bednarski represented some of the most high-profile defendants in entertainment law. They took D4vd's murder case. Then they quit.
The withdrawal came weeks before the family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court naming not just David Anthony Burke, but his mother Colleen Burke, his managers, his recording company, and his publishing company. The complaint alleges a system of enablement: company funds allegedly used to pay for housing and security, a bodyguard who allegedly transported a minor, and managers who the family says knew what was happening.
Burke was determined to qualify for a public defender. Walid Kandeel of the LA County Public Defender's Office now represents him. Burke pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, continuous illegal conduct involving a person under 14, and mutilation of remains. The DA's office says the death penalty remains on the table.
Celeste Rivas Hernandez's remains were found in the trunk of Burke's Tesla at a Hollywood impound lot in September 2025. She was 14. Prosecutors allege she was killed after she threatened to come forward about the relationship. Text messages presented at the preliminary hearing allegedly showed she had become pregnant and undergone a procedure.

JP Miller stood at the pulpit of Solid Rock Church and preached at the memorial service for his estranged wife, Mica Miller. Witnesses described his language as possessive. He spoke about her body. He centered the moment around himself. For the people who had spent months watching Mica report harassment and beg for help, the performance was the final confirmation.
Mica Miller died on April 27, 2024, at a North Carolina state park. Her death was ruled a suicide. She was 30 years old. She had served JP with divorce papers two days before. In the months leading up to her death, she filed police reports describing GPS tracking, razor blades in her tires, and a pattern of behavior she called coercive control.
Federal prosecutors charged JP Miller with cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. The indictment alleges a harassment campaign that lasted from November 2022 until her death. He has pleaded not guilty.
Mica's family says the congregation at Solid Rock Church closed ranks around JP while Mica was systematically pushed out. The people who should have been her support system became part of the cage.

D4vd inner circle lawsuit — the family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez did not limit their civil action to the musician. They went after the adults who allegedly watched it happen.
The wrongful death lawsuit, filed September 8, 2026, names Colleen Burke, manager Josh Marshall, security guard Sheldon Jacques, and business entities. Twelve causes of action. The family alleges these adults knew or should have known what was happening to a fourteen-year-old and failed to act.
Burke's former financial manager testified to earnings exceeding ten million dollars. Weeks after Celeste's remains were discovered, Burke transferred two Texas homes to his mother to shield assets. He now uses a public defender and is held without bail.
