Watch Out for Fireballs!

Things are not going well at a secluded monastery in the Pyranees mountains of Spain. The Inquisitor and the Mother Superior treat the mentally ill people in their care like prisoners, and they’re starting to disappear one by one. It’s up to Father Alfredo and a team of misfits to use their complementary skills to investigate what’s happening and bring it to a stop. The result is a board game-like real time stealth and strategy game that runs out of tricks well before either of its campaigns finish.

Cultic is a boomer shooter unlike any that we’ve played, being equal parts Blood and Resident Evil 4. You play as the Detective, who woke up in a cult’s mass grave and must now go on a rampage to stop them. What results is one of the best games we’ve played this year.

Do you love cars? Are you ready to be forced to love a very specific car? That’s what Pacific Drive is all about, you and your car against a bizarre zone of anomalous chaos. It’s not quite horror, and the survival mechanics aren’t everything you’d expect them to be, but this roguelike will challenge you to take care of your station wagon so it will take care of you. It’s just too bad that the story and tone are a shade too cartoony for the gravitas the developers were aiming for.

Pandemic Studios really knew what they were doing, and it’s a real shame their style of destruction-based open world games didn’t become the norm. That’s how you’ll feel when you play the Saboteur, the studio’s swan song. You are Sean Devlin, an Irish racecar driver who joins the French Resistance during World War II to get revenge on the Nazis. You may only be aware of this game because of its black and white-to-color visual trick, but there’s so much more to recommend it.
