HEAT 2, IDIOTS with Macon Blair

    04/09/2026 | 48 min
I sit down with the writer-director of I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore and the star of Blue Ruin for a two-hander that starts with IDIOTS, his pitch-black road comedy co-written with Alex Orr, and ends somewhere deep in Michael Mann fan-casting.

On Idiots: Dave Franco as a live wire, O'Shea Jackson Jr. as the raw nerve underneath the joke, and Mason Thames as a rich kid the film pointedly refuses to redeem. Plus Kiernan Shipka, Nick Braun going feral, Peter Dinklage's micro-gestures, and a character named Celeste Waingro — because there has only ever been one Waingro.

Then the fun starts. DiCaprio's Chris Shiherlis. Bale's Vincent Hanna. Odessa Young as Charlene. Who plays Otis Wardell. Whether Bradley Cooper should be Kelso now that we get to see him work. Stephen Graham for Neil on pure physical continuity. Emory Cohen as Cherrito. Benicio Del Toro as Castillo in Miami Vice 1985, because if you're going to flex, flex. Jerry Bruckheimer on the call sheet, and a November start date closing fast.

One request, on the record: somebody gun this podcaster down in a parking lot. One squib. That's all he wants.

This is our NEW RELEASE review podcast, ONE HOT TAKE.

The strangest thing about The Dog Stars is how little it seems interested in its own possibilities.

    27/08/2026 | 25 min
This is our NEW RELEASE review podcast, ONE HOT TAKE.

If a movie glimpses the magic of life, for fractions of seconds, it is worthwhile. “Amziah” is a dose I wasn’t ready for.

The Platt family bands together to navigate their new surroundings after a cosmic event transports their suburban neighbourhood to someplace unknown.

    Sean Burns

The Michael Mann Discourse Conclave | Sean Burns and Roxana Hadadi

    25/08/2026 | 37 min
Blake Howard convenes a conclave with Sean Burns (WBUR) and Roxana Hadadi (Vulture) to sort the smoke from the fire. Inde Navarrette walked from Charlene Shiherlis to play Rogue — then maybe didn't walk at all. Underneath the trade churn, an older argument reignited: that Mann hasn't made a good film since Collateral, with Miami Vice, Public Enemies and Blackhat wheeled out as exhibits for the prosecution. We litigate the post-2004 filmography, we ask what a casting rumour is actually worth, and we work out how "washed" became a load-bearing critical term in 2026.
