Here’s our episode on the Lanterns finale, a series that ended up carrying more weight with all of us than I think we realized it would. Hope you enjoy our take on it.

And huge thanks to all of you for following along with us! We really appreciate you guys. If there’s a season 2, we’ll be back, and we’ll probably jump on and talk about Man of Tomorrow — the upcoming Superman movie featuring the next appearance of John Stewart — when it comes out next July.

Contest
Big congrats to the winners of our Casting Light Oath contest (listen to find out who)! They’ll each win their choice of a Lanterns tribute poster, illustrated by the one and only Kirk Manley. Check out those and a bunch of other of his illustrations at https://www.instagram.com/batmankm/

On brightest screen, in blackest mic
No theory shall escape our sight
With thoughtful takes and deep insight
Beware our podcast, we're Casting Light!

Also on Wax Episodic:
We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:
Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers’ minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It’s beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen’s innies.
Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen.
IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.
Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy.

“I hate waiting. You got anybody to eat around here?”
Penny and Kara talk through this noir-heist episode and find some tangents along the way including ads on streaming platforms, Las Vegas as the perfect city for vampires, Heist movies like Ocean’s Eleven and The Thomas Crown Affair, Pierce Brosnan, James Bond, exploitative costuming, celebrity sightings, and, as usual, vampire dietary requirements.
Next time we’ll tackle BTVS Season 5, episode 8, “Shadow.”

Halloween is in the air, and we’re breaking from the rewatch for the new Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, premiering this Thursday, October 15, on Peacock. We’ve seen the first couple of episodes, and I think you’re gonna like it! It’s surprisingly fun, with some dark comedy, and the great Linda Cardellini putting in an incredible performance as Pamela Voorhees. Even if you don’t usually like slasher flicks, I recommend giving this one a shot. Like with The Walking Dead, this series is about the characters.

Cohosting with me will be two of the biggest horror fans I know, Nathan and Jayme, and in this ep we get you ready by going back to the beginning, with some talk about Friday the 13th Parts 1 & 2. I had not seen these since the early ‘80s, when I was 11 years old, and I was a little freaked out to revisit them. But it ended up being a pleasure to be transported to another time. These are classic slasher flicks though, so be warned!

Check out my (Jason’s) other podcast, Wax Episodic, where friends and I cover our favorite current shows, like:
Widow’s Bay, the multiple-Emmy-winning show about a cursed New England island town and the befuddled mayor trying to bring tourism to it that somehow manages to be charmingly quirky, creepy as hell, and laugh-out-loud funny. Covered by me and Karen.
Lanterns, the prestige TV-meets-comics, gritty, small-town crime show featuring galactic space cops. Covered by me, Kirk, and Jim.
Severance, the mysterious, mind-bending, amusingly strange Apple TV workplace thriller about identity, memory, and corporate control. Covered by me and Karen. (!)
Pluribus, the Twilight-Zoney Apple TV show from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, covered by me and Karen.
It: Welcome to Derry, the horrific HBO series, prequel to the recent It movies based on the Stephen King book. Covered by me and Shawn of Strange Indeed.
Fallout, the crazy, funny, retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic series on Amazon Prime Video. Covered by me, Kara, and Kasi.
Alien: Earth, the heady, gross-out FX/Hulu sci-fi series based on the Alien movies. Covered by me, Randy, and Kara.
