Batuman is the author of “The Possessed: Adventures with Russian Books and the People Who Read Them” and the novel “The Idiot,” which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. “The Repugnant Conclusion” was adapted from her second novel, “Either/Or,” which will be published in May.
